Registration & Updates!

Be sure to click HERE for information from Principal Atkins about how to register online and for updates to learning.

All students will be learning remotely until October 16th.

I am highly aware that this time has caused a lot of anxiety for families trying to prepare for the school year. I am striving to provide answers as best I can, but we also know that changes will likely continue to be made on a somewhat regular basis. For now, I hope the following information is of some help, and we appreciate your flexibility as we continue to plan.

ACTION STEPS FOR EVERY FAMILY
Please complete your Annual Family Update as soon as you have made a learning plan decision.
  • You must have a Parent Portal account to do so, visit this page if you need to create one: https://myportal.dpsk12.org/
  • If you need support with your online registration, please be sure to fill out this survey so we can be in touch.
  • We hope you can complete the Annual Family Update by Tuesday, August 4th or at your earliest convenience for our planning purposes. This information will inform several school-based decisions and is critical to our in-person learning plans.
Please complete a “Free & Reduced Lunch” application here: https://www.myschoolapps.com/Application
  • All families must complete this form, even if you do not qualify
  • If you have not completed our Stedman survey to assist in our planning, please do so here
LEARNING PLAN CLARIFICATIONS
With the Annual Family Update now available, DPS is asking that families complete this online registration as soon as they are able. It is during this registration that you will select the “In-Person” or “Virtual” learning plan options. This is highly important for our planning at Stedman.
  • In-Person Learning: This option will keep you with a Stedman teacher with your assigned class and program. This option will begin with remote learning and hopefully move to In-Person learning when safe.
  • Virtual Learning: This option will keep your student learning remotely 100% of the time, but it will keep your child enrolled at Stedman. Virtual Learning will be run by the District. There is no guarantee you will receive a Stedman teacher. At this time, we do NOT know if Spanish Immersion will be an option for the 100% Virtual Learning option. We need to know how many students are requesting 100% Virtual from our Immersion program in order to know if we have enough teachers to lead this option. In order to best plan, we need families to complete the Annual Family Update (or our survey at minimum).
  • Note: you will not lose your seat at Stedman if you choose Virtual learning, however you will not be guaranteed a Stedman teacher with this option at this time. DPS will do their best to keep you with a teacher from our area.
  • Note: public education funding is tied to enrollment. I want to make sure families are aware that withdrawing from your child’s public school also removes significant funding from that school.
  • Note: DPS is asking that once you make a selection, you remain in that program through December.
YOUR FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
When can I receive a Chromebook for my child?
  • DPS will be handling the distribution of devices this Fall. Please stay tuned for more information, we will send it out when we have more. We believe these will be distributed during the 2nd week of August.
Remote Learning was extremely difficult and stressful for me in the Spring. What will be different this Fall?
  • We understand the shift to remote learning was sudden and reactive last Spring. From that experience we have learned a lot about what it looks like to teach remotely. The good news is that it will look VERY different this school year as the District has had time to improve systems and train educators.
  • We are pleased with our progress in preparing for remote learning, and we also understand that there is added concern for families in the Spanish Immersion program at Stedman. We will be adding additional supports to serve our Spanish Language Learners such as a program tool to assist with language acquisition similar to Rosetta Stone. We are also developing a strategic schedule to allow for students to engage in a lesson immediately followed by office hours and small group instruction. We hope this takes the lift of teaching off of the parent. We are confident that these shifts will support us in our goal of creating independent lifelong learners and bilingual students who are on the trajectory of achieving the seal of biliteracy.
  • Daily schedules will look much different than this Spring – remote learning will include live instruction, small group work, and one platform across K-5 (Seesaw).
  • See more detailed information in my last letter: https://conta.cc/2WPZau0
How will in-person meals work?
  • Students and staff may not share food. All meals will be served either in the cafeteria or in the classroom. If served in cafeterias, students will get the food at a designated time with their cohort and take it back to the classroom. Students will need to wash their hands before and after eating.
How will meals work during remote learning?
  • Meal distribution is ongoing through both DPS and some local Rec Centers. Please visit this page to learn more about locations and times for breakfast/lunch/dinner meal pickups.
What happens if my student has an IEP?
  • The DPS special education department is currently developing guidelines to support students based on the various groups and needs within special education. This guidance will cover a wide variety of issues and topics such as determining compensatory services, families that choose the Virtual Program (fully remote) option, making up missed evaluations, and how services will be delivered under the current health guidelines. When instructional staff return to work, they will be trained in these guidelines. Families will work with their school-level team to resolve individual concerns.
Will before/after childcare be available when we are back in person?
  • Yes! We have a new partnership with Leading Edge. Find more information here.
When will we receive school supply lists?
  • We are in the process of finalizing these and will send them out next week.
Can you help us create “learning pods” to supplement learning?
  • As parents consider creating “learning pods”, we know there are a lot of important factors to take into account. As a community that values Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, we hope those are the values leading any decisions or actions being made by our families. We are working on some messaging and potential tools for connections with parents and hope to send that out next week.
Will there be a dress code during in-person learning?
  • No. We have ended the Stedman dress code. We hope that takes one burden off your plate this year.
When will I know who my child’s teacher will be?
  • Because we need to know how many students are participating in each learning plan (Virtual vs. In-Person), we cannot finalize class lists at this time. The sooner we have families’ selections, the sooner we will be able to finalize and share class lists.
What is happening with ECE?
  • At this time, DPS has stated that ECE will not be participating in remote learning. They have indicated a desire to make sure students are phased in to in-person learning when it is safe, as our youngest learners are certainly a high priority. We will continue to await more information from the District.
In addition, DPS has put together a lengthy FAQ page with many answers to common questions about this new school year including health and safety protocols. Please visit this page for more information.
